Background
The Department of Animal Science offers professional training at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Animal science is concerned with the science, art and business of the production of beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, poultry, sheep and swine. An animal scientist is concerned with the application of the principles of the biological, physical and social sciences to the problems associated with livestock production and management.Animal science is also concerned with the products of food animals: meat, dairy foods and eggs. The food industry is one of the largest and most important industries in the United States. Students can gain expertise in the processing, quality control and marketing of meat, dairy and poultry products. The undergraduate program leads to the Bachelor of Science degree and graduate studies culminate in the Master of Science, Master of Agriculture (emphasis in animal science) or the Doctor of Philosophy in nutrition, animal breeding and animal reproduction, or food science.
