CASNR names outstanding freshmen

Alva, Oklahoma, native, Courtney Mapes, was named Oklahoma State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Charles and Magda Browning Outstanding Freshman for 2016.

Alva, Oklahoma, native, Courtney Mapes, was named Oklahoma State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Charles and Magda Browning Outstanding Freshman for 2016.

Mapes is an animal science major with a minor in microbiology and a 2014 graduate of Alva High School. She is the daughter of Jeff and Michelle Mapes.

The Brownings established the Outstanding Freshman award to recognize both the academic excellence and outstanding leadership activity during a student’s freshman year at OSU. It is awarded at the end of a student’s sophomore year for their efforts as a freshman in CASNR.

Mapes’ collegiate activities include being a member of the Collegiate Farm Bureau, involvement in Greek and campus life activities, and participating in numerous community service projects through Chi Omega women’s fraternity.

“It is such an honor to have been selected for this award,” Mapes said. “During my time at OSU CASNR I have been pushed to excel not only by family but also by my advisor and professors. It has definitely made a difference in my college experience having so many supportive people available and willing to assist me.”

Mapes also is a member of the Student Alumni Board, President’s Leadership Council, Oklahoma Collegiate Cattlewomen, Swine Club, Pre-Vet Club and was a Freshmen in Transition member.

“Freshmen students are encouraged to get involved in CASNR and all across campus. Some students take this advice to heart, Courtney is no exception,” said Cynda Clary, CASNR associate dean of academic programs. “In only a short two years, Courtney has left her mark on this campus and we have confidence she will continue to positively impact OSU as she continues her collegiate career.

Mapes is an early admit pre-veterinary student and has been awarded over $99,000 in college scholarships. She maintains a perfect 4.0 GPA all while volunteering her time to numerous community service projects. This includes Special Olympics, Oklahoma Youth Expo, the Oklahoma Blood Institute and the Oklahoma Regional Food Bank.

Mapes also is the recipient of the Marvin Klemme Agriculture Endowed Memorial Scholarship.
