Fitch honored with Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising and Mentoring

Jerry Fitch, animal science professor at Oklahoma State University, was recognized with the Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising and Mentoring at the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Scholarships and Awards Banquet on March 31.

Jerry Fitch, animal science professor at Oklahoma State University, was recognized with the Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising and Mentoring at the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Scholarships and Awards Banquet on March 31.

Fitch has been with the animal science department for more than 25 years. He joined the faculty as an assistant professor in 1988 and was promoted to professor 11 years later.

Fitch serves as the advisor to more than 100 students. Having previously served as the department’s undergraduate advising coordinator, Fitch often holds workshops to help the animal science faculty grow in their advising skills.

“Dr. Fitch’s passion for advising and commitment to students makes him deserving of this award,” said Cynda Clary, CASNR associate dean of academic programs. “The impact he has on undergraduate students in the college is immeasurable.”

Currently the department’s teaching coordinator he maintains the option sheets for both animal science and food science majors.

“Dr. Fitch is the most knowledgeable faculty member in our department when it comes to the undergraduate curriculum,” said Clint Rusk, OSU Animal Science Department head.

Fitch is the coordinator for the Oklahoma Agricultural Leadership Encounter and formerly was the advisor for the OSU Block and Bridle Club, the Animal Science Leadership Alliance, the Agriculture Student Council and The Farm Theory.

Kristi Bishop, CASNR prospective student coordinator, said she has worked with Fitch for a number of years during both her academic and professional career.

“As a recruiter, I often speak of the Cowboy Family, and it is individuals like Dr. Fitch who embody what this means through their dedication to making a difference in the lives of our students,” she said.
