STILLWATER, Okla. – Beatrix Haggard, assistant professor in the department of plant and soil sciences at Oklahoma State University, was recognized with the Early Career Award for Excellence in Teaching at the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Scholarships and Awards Banquet on March 29.

The award recognizes and promotes exceptional teaching by a faculty member with less than five years of experience in higher education teaching.

Haggard has been part of the CASNR faculty since 2015 and serves as an undergraduate and graduate student advisor, instructor for two courses, agronomy club co-advisor, and the OSU crops judging team coach.

“Dr. Haggard is a passionate teacher who is dedicated to student learning,” said Cynda Clary, CASNR associate dean of academic programs. “Her active use of technology in the classroom, as well as practical aspects of plant science enrich student learning. As the instructor to one of our CASNR core courses, she strives to establish a connection between her course material and the majors of more than 450 students each year.”

Haggard is constantly finding new ways to transform her teaching techniques and more effectively reach her students, said Jeff Edwards, plant and soil sciences department head.

“She is dedicated to student learning and committed to providing an enriching and enlightening experience to students both inside and outside the traditional classroom,” Edwards said.

Haggard’s teaching efforts have brought stability and consistency to the plant and soil science curriculum and to undergraduate advising, Edwards said. In turn, this stability has improved student recruitment, retention and satisfaction in the department.

“As my students progress, I like to remind them that there are many times in field applications and life in general, that there is no single correct answer,” Haggard said.

Haggard is known for being relatable and willing to go to any length to help a student understand curriculum.

“She is very generous with her time, talents and knowledge,” a current student said. “I cannot think of a more qualified and worthy person for this award.”
