Freshmen Orientation (AG 1011)

AG 1011 is the freshmen orientation course for new students enrolled in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Every freshman that comes to OSU is required to take a freshman orientation course, and AG 1011 is the course new CASNR students get to experience twice per week during the first eight weeks of their freshmen fall semester.

Upon completing AG 1011, each student should have:

  • Established beneficial relationships with faculty, staff and fellow students
  • Learned more about the various student organizations in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources
  • Accepted major responsibility for his/her learning and academic success
  • Developed skills and strategies for achieving academic success (study skills, effective note-taking, test-taking, etc.)
  • Increased his/her comfort level relative to participating in small group discussions/activities
  • Developed academic and personal goals and established time management strategies for more effective time utilization
  • Increased his/her awareness of student services and University resources (Library, Career Services)
  • Developed strategies to effectively meet the challenges associated with making the transition from high school to college
  • Been stimulated to think more critically and creatively, and
  • Had fun and enjoyed the class.

All students enrolled in AG 1011 are assigned to a small group led by a CASNR Student Academic Mentor (SAM), an uperclassman who is experienced in navigating college life with success.  At specified times during the course, students will meet with their small group, where small group discussion and (or) activities will be led by the SAM. This is a unique characteristic of this course that many CASNR students truly enjoy.
