Oklahoma State University

Pre-Professional Programs

CASNR has majors that allow students interested in Pre-Law, Pre-Veterinary Medicine, Pre-Medicine, Pre-Pharmacy or other health professions to pursue their goals of advanced professional study.  Pre-professional requirements can be met within almost any major at Oklahoma State University, but because of the strong science foundation within the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, our majors are popular with students interested in pursuing professional degrees.

Choosing A Major for Pre-Med, Pre-Vet or Pre-Health Studies

Animal Science, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Entomology, Plant and Soil Sciences and Agricultural Economics can all boast alumni who now are practicing veterinary medicine, general medicine, pharmacy, dentstry, cardiology,  dermitology and many other specilized and allied health professions.  Graduates of these programs also serve as medical researchers or veterinary medical researchers. The strong scientific yet applied undergraduate degree programs in CASNR, combined with student leadership opportunities are contributing factors that allow CASNR students to achieve their goals of advanced study within the broad disciplines of both human and animal health-related studies.

Agribusiness, Animal Science, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Entomology have specific degree options for Pre-Medical and Pre-Veterinary Medical studies. Students interested in a variety of health professions have pursued these undergraduate degrees. Certainly, students who enjoy science will also enjoy the courses offered in the pre-professional options through Agribusiness, Animal Science, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology,  Entomology or any other science-based program in CASNR.  The decision of which major to select should be based upon students' individual interests, talents and skills.

Choosing a Major for Pre-Law Studies

Law schools seek out students with diversified experiences and viewpoints, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, and exceptional writing skills.  CASNR's Agribusiness major has a specific degree option for students interested in Pre-Law that promotes the development of these characteristics. Three former OSU Truman Scholars were graduates in the  Agribusiness-Pre-Law major and have completed their law degrees at Yale University, the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma City University.  For those students with interests in Environmental Law, a B.S. in Environmental Science within CASNR is an excellent foundation to build upon prior to acceptance into law school.  Several students with backgrounds in Agricultural Communications have also used their diverse agricultural knowledge and well-developed writing skills as their foundation for completing their law degrees.  As with choosing a major for pre-health studies, students should decide upon the major that is most compatible with their own personal interests, talents and skills.
